The Legacy of the Obanikoro Chieftaincy Family of Lagos

200 Years of Leadership

Our History

From Warrior Kings to Modern Custodians

For over two centuries, the Obanikoro dynasty has shaped Lagos’ cultural and political landscape. Founded by Oluwo Nla—a warrior, Ifa priest, and king of Idoluwo-Ile—the family earned its chieftaincy title through valor and wisdom. In 1861, Chief Kumeifo, the 7th Obanikoro, signed the Treaty of Cession, marking Lagos’ transition under British rule. Today, we honor this legacy while pioneering sustainable development through Project Greenfield.
