Obanikoro of Lagos and Idoluwole

  In the 18th century, Oluwo Nla—warrior, Ifa priest, and Alade of Idoluwo-Ile—answered the Oba of Benin’s call. His mastery of Ifa divination saved the Oba’s heir, earning him the title Obanikoro and the right to beat the royal Gbedu drum.

Important Milestones

  • 1861: Chief Kumeifo signs the Treaty of Cession.
  • 1909: Supreme Court victory reclaims ancestral lands.

Current Titleholder: HRH Chief Adesoji Ajayi-Bembe

Born in Lagos in 1965, Chief Adesoji Ajayi-Bembe ascended the stool in 2010. A champion of youth education, he spearheads Project Greenfield to sustainably develop ancestral lands.
